The prerequisites for this training are the “First Aid in the Workplace” and “Fall Protection” courses.

Description

The purpose of this training is to develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to perform a technical rescue for a person working at heights. This training is based on LSST c. S-2.1, RSST c. S-2.1, r.13, CSTC c. S-2.1, R.4, NFPA 1006, NFPA 1670, NFPA 1983, High Angle Rescue Techniques, Académie des pompiers, and Vertical Rescue laws and standards.

Goals

  • Applying occupational health and safety rules
  • Leading a team to rescue a suspended victim
  • Transferring a suspended victim to an evacuation system
  • Act as a rescuer using a stretcher lowering/raising system
  • Setting up an overhead bridge system
  • Ascending a rope system, moving horizontally while using fall protection equipment

Content

  • Handling personal protective equipment and coveralls
  • Handling stabilization equipment: SKED, rescue seat, half-back harness, stretcher
  • Handling lifesaving equipment: carabiners, ascenders/descenders
  • Setting up an evacuation system with a basket
  • Suspended victim transfer
  • Practising using systems with a compound mechanical advantage
  • Ascending a rope system and belaying

Evaluation

One 25-question exam and an assessment of working knowledge: acting as a rescuer in a descent/ascent with a rescue basket and as a team, building an overhead bridge system. The required passing grade is 80%. A supplemental exam is available.
