The prerequisite for this training is “Workplace First Aid.”

Description

This training is based on RRQ, c. Q-2, r.15.2, NFPA 472, APSAM, Académie des pompiers, and Responding in the Presence of Hazardous Materials laws and standards.

  • Identifying different products
  • Understanding the classification systems
  • Understanding the different reference materials
  • Using senses to detect the presence of hazardous materials
  • Detecting and measuring hazardous materials
  • Understanding substance impact, control, and mitigation
  • Understanding geographical layouts
  • Becoming familiar with types of chemical protection equipment
  • Carrying out decontamination
  • Understanding different phenomena: BLEVE/BOILOVER/CBRN
  • Seeing the differences between flammable gases and flammable liquids

Content

  • Safety standards and safety rules
  • Emergency response plan
  • WHMIS requirements and using material safety data sheets
  • Risks, standards, and levels of exposure
  • Handling personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus
  • Using tools: GMU, MSDS, detector, decontamination equipment
  • Simulation equipment (gas, liquid, solid)
  • Medical follow-up and first aid

Evaluation

One 25-question exam and an assessment of working knowledge: using a multi-gas detector, wearing an SBCA, working while wearing an encapsulated suit. The required passing grade is 80%. A supplemental exam is available.
