Description

By the end of this training, candidates will be able to provide a response for a small spill involving hazardous materials, while protecting lives, property, and the environment. This training is based on Légis Québec Q-2, r.32, NFPA 472, Académie des pompiers, and Responding in the Presence of Hazardous Materials laws and standards.

Goals

  • Applying occupational health and safety rules
  • Assessing an incident
  • Using an Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)
  • Planning an emergency response
  • Using the emergency plan
  • Using plugging products like rods, absorbents, etc.
  • Detecting and measuring a spill
  • Assessing how an emergency response is progressing
  • Equipment return-to-service

Content

  • Risk of exposure
  • Standards and levels of exposure according to detection and measurements
  • Handling personal protective equipment
  • Using small spill plugging products
  • Medical follow-up and first aid
  • Using tools: GMU, MSDS, detector, decontamination equipment
  • Simulation equipment (gas, liquid, solid)

Evaluation

One 25-question exam and an assessment of working knowledge: using a multi-gas detector and determining an exclusion area. The required passing grade is 80%. A supplemental exam is available.
