Who is this training for?

All workers who are required to perform a technical rescue in a confined space, using lifesaving equipment.
The prerequisites for this training are the “Confined Space Worker” and “First Aid in the Workplace” courses.

Description

At the end of this training, the candidate will be able to perform a technical rescue for a worker in a confined space.  This training is based on RSST S-2.1, s. 223, CSA Z1006, NFPA 1006, NFPA 1983, NFPA 1670, Académie des pompiers, and Confined Space Rescue laws and standards.

Goals

  • Applying health and safety rules related to technical rescue in confined spaces
  • Knowing the regulations that apply to technical rescues in confined spaces
  • Understanding and managing the risks associated with technical rescues in confined spaces
  • Atmospheric detection and measurements
  • Providing ventilation
  • Wearing a respiratory protection device
  • Determining access points
  • Using specialized equipment like ropes, pulleys, stopping devices, etc.
  • Tying rescue knots
  • Building a system for mechanical advantage
  • Performing a safe technical rescue
  • Performing a rescue using a winch and/or a system that provides a mechanical advantage

Content

  • Legal framework and definitions
  • Identifying and controlling hazards
  • Handling retrieval equipment: SKED, half-back, rescue seat, rescue basket, pole.
  • Handling lifesaving equipment: tripod, ventilator, carabiners, rope
  • Handling personal protective equipment: helmet, safety boots, glasses,
    gloves.
  • Handling breathing apparatus and supplied air respirators
  • Handling lockout equipment
  • Simulating packaging a victim
  • Simulating horizontal and vertical rescues

Evaluation

One 25-question exam and an assessment of working knowledge: wearing an SCBA, using a supplied air respirator, packaging a victim using a SKED, packaging of a victim using a half-back harness, carrying out a technical rescue (group assessment). The required passing grade is 80%. A supplemental exam is available.
