Who is this training for?

All workers who are required to perform a simple rescue in a confined space, using basic lifesaving equipment.
The prerequisites for this training are the “Confined Space Worker” and “First Aid in the Workplace” courses.

Description

The purpose of the training is to develop the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to perform a simple rescue for a worker in a confined space. This training is based on CSA Z1006, CSA Z460, NFPA 1006, Académie des pompiers, and Confined Space Rescue standards.

Goals

  • Applying health and safety rules related to confined space rescue
  • Knowing the regulations that apply to confined space rescue
  • Knowing and managing the risks associated with confined space rescues
  • Atmospheric detection and measurements
  • Determining access points
  • Providing ventilation
  • Performing a safe technical rescue
  • Performing a rescue using a winch or lifeline
  • Performing a rescue using retrieval equipment

Content

  • Legal framework and definitions
  • Identifying and controlling hazards
  • Handling retrieval equipment: SKED, half-back, rescue basket, pole
  • Handling lifesaving equipment: winch, multi-gas detector, carabiners, ascenders/descenders, etc.
  • Handling personal protective equipment: helmet, safety boots, glasses, gloves, etc.
  • Simulating packaging a victim
  • Simulating horizontal and vertical rescues

Evaluation

One 25-question written exam and an assessment of working knowledge: using a multi-gas detector, packaging a victim in a SKED and a half-back harness. The required passing grade is 80%. A supplemental exam is available.
