Ambatovy is the largest open-pit mine in the world and the largest industrial project in the history of Madagascar. The mine produces 60,000 tonnes of nickel and 5,600 tonnes of cobalt per year and employs over 20,000 people from more than 10 countries. Targe was hired to find solutions to issues related to compliance with standards of responsibility for environmental protection, emergency response implementation and procedures, workforce qualifications, chemical spill management, and subcontractor compliance. Targe implemented standards to meet the requirements of lending institutions. The assignment included preparing a report and supervision procedures, establishing response time performance objectives, implementing a custom training program, and developing subcontractor training procedures to avoid contaminating marshes with chemical products.
